The Transportation Secretariat consists of 7 agencies that work together to help move Virginia’s economy forward.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) – The Virginia Department of Transportation builds, maintains and operates the state’s roads, bridges and tunnels focusing on safety, enabling easy movement of people and goods, enhancing the economy and improving our quality of life. VDOT projects are funded by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB).

The Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) - The Department of Rail and Public Transportation supports mass public transportation, including rail, buses, carpooling and vanpooling. DRPT also operates TeleworkVA!, the statewide program that provides teleworking options for businesses within the Commonwealth. DRPT’s mission is to facilitate and improve the mobility of the citizens of Virginia, promoting the efficient transport of goods and people in a safe, reliable and cost-effective manner. DRPT also advocates transportation options to the general public, businesses, and legislators.

Department of Aviation (DOAV) – The Virginia Department of Aviation provides the safest and most efficient services for all aspects of air travel, including operation of commercial and private airplanes, promoting aviation awareness and education and managing funding for aviation projects.

Virginia Port Authority – The Virginia Port Authority manages cargo transported through our 6 ports to various markets around the globe. Manufacturers, corporations and individual consumers use these goods and supplies in their everyday lives. The Virginia Port Authority is committed to providing superior service, safe transport and continuous improvement.

Motor Vehicle Dealer Board – The Motor Vehicle Dealer Board oversees and regulates new and used car and truck dealer industry, assisting in improving how goods and services are transported within the Commonwealth of Virginia. This nineteen member board is appointed by the governor.

Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority (VCSFA) – The Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority operates the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport, located at NASA Wallops Flight Facility on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Virginia Space aims to provide safe, reliable, and responsive Space Access at competitive prices, and is proud to offer full-service launch facilities for commercial, government, scientific and academic users both foreign and domestic.

Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) – The Department of Motor Vehicles focuses on supporting and enhancing safety on the roads by issuing driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations, providing Commercial Driver Improvement Clinics, promoting driver education and awareness and providing various resources for citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI) encourages the coordination of multimodal and intermodal planning across the various transportation options within Virginia. Oversees the SMART SCALE program, which is an objective means for selecting and allocating capitol transportation improvements throughout the Commonwealth.
