On Dec 13, 2017, Gov.-elect Ralph Northam designated Shannon Valentine as secretary of transportation for the Commonwealth of Virginia. She was sworn into office in January 2018.
As secretary, she also serves as chairperson of the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB).
She oversees seven agencies with more than 10,000 employees and combined budgets of more than $5 billion.
She is a writer and public speaker and is a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates.
She was appointed to the CTB by Gov. Terry McAuliffe in May 2014, following an assignment as a director of the Transportation Policy Council for McAuliffe's transition team.
Valentine is a founding member of OneVirginia2021: Virginians for Fair Redistricting, a vice chair of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia, and chair of Investor Relations for Beacon of Hope, an organization dedicated to inspiring and preparing students for post-secondary education.
During her time in the legislature, her public policy priorities included ethics, economic development, education, and transportation.
She served as a member of Courts of Justice and House Transportation committees, and led the bipartisan effort to invest in intercity passenger rail service for the first time in Virginia’s history.
Valentine graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia in economics, and from Education for Ministry, a four-year program through Sewanee University’s School of Theology.
Valentine is married to Dr. Mike Valentine, and has three children, Catherine, Jack and Brooke.
